Baja Peninsula

In the Northwestern region of Mexico, along the Pacific Ocean, is the Baja California Peninsula which is separated by the ocean from the Gulf of California. The 1,247-mile-long stretch of peninsula includes the northern parts of Mexicali, Baja California, and the southern areas of Cabo San Lucas and Baja California Sur. There are four primary desert areas on the peninsula, including the San Felipe Desert, the Central Coast Desert, the Vizcaino Desert, and the Magdalena Plain Desert. The surrounding states that make up this region are California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and portions of Colorado and Wyoming. The peninsula includes both Baja California and Alta California. Among the largest of the bays that make up the coastline of the Gulf are Bahia de La Paz and Bahia Concepcion. The smallest bay is Bahia de los Angeles, located just west of the Canal de las Ballenas and acts as a barrier between the peninsula of Baja California and the island of Angel de la Guarda located in the Gulf of California.
